Having successfully assasinated Peter Dunne, politically, the opposition is now moving into full nasty mode and showing their true colours. Winston Peters now declares Dunne has leaked many other documents as well as the GCSB report. Of course, Peters knows that Dunne can’t defend himself against any of these accusations, having chosen the route of resignation rather than revealing the content of his e-mails. This is the equivalent of tying the man’s hands behind his back and then swiftly kicking him in his genitals. Nasty is too gentle a word for this.
All of this is solely so Peters can stay in the news for a few more days and milk the situation for maximum value.
And talking of political opportunists, the filing of police charges by Peters, Shearer and Norman is nothing but political theatre. As many have pointed out, the GCSB report was unclassified and about to be released into the public domain anyway. This is therefore not a criminal matter in any way and I would expect a quick response from the police to confirm that. In addition, the police have absolutely no powers to compel Dunne to release his e-mails unless they have reasonable grounds to believe that the conceal evidence of criminal activity. Good luck getting a search warrant from a judge.
This political grandstanding has many of the left-wing blogs reacting in horror, particularly Idiot Savant at No Right Turn who opines:
“Calls for leakers to be prosecuted should be seen in the same light as calling environmentalists treasonous economic saboteurs: the last refuge of scoundrels. I expect the Greens to support democratic values and be above such things.”
I am touched by his naivety. Both Russell Norman and Metiria Turei are dye-in-the-wool Marxists. Like all communists, authoritarianism comes naturally to them – so it comes as no surprise that “ratting on the party” would be considered a criminal offence. Of more interest is Labour’s willingness to bring police into this matter, given Phil Goff’s collusion with the MFAT leaker. One would have thought it would have been more prudent to keep out of the matter and let Peters do the dirty work, rather than set themselves up for comparisons between the GCSB and the MFAT leaks.
I suspect that Shearer is currently suffering from Mallardies. All the time.
