It is now more than 24 hours since David Shearer became the New Leader of the Labour party and, possibly, the opposition. I have been racking my brains to try and say anything about him. Good, bad, funny, witty. ANYTHING. Goodness, I thought Invisible Phil was hard work but at least he stuck his head above the parapet every now and again. It kind of looks like Shearer will be spending the duration behind a cardboard cut-out of Fossie Bear.
That was almost funny – but, naah, still got nothing.
Pretty much what the Labour Party still have…

Shearer? Was he the guy who said “I started out with nothing, and I still have most of it”?

How about a comparison with Brash?
Both men initially failed at politics, then took high paying jobs, then both effectively parachuted into Parliament, one by the list, the other with a sinecure seat, both took over their parties with about the same experience.. and both by a mix of gouchness, some real world if taxpayer funded experience and supposed “freshness”, yet one was 61 at the time of taking the leadership and the other 54.. one made his name complaining about “unequal” race treatment and the other will surely complain about unequal wealth, especially between the races.
However, you could argue the real comparison is between the circumstances in 2003 and 2011 that allowed this odd couple to take over. Maybe you cant write much about Shearer because, like Brash, he’s a creature of circumstance (and luck).

Let’s face it, you’re unable to be pleasant, so your silence should be viewed positively. You could criticise him for not wanting to allow children to be flogged by responsible adults or something.

That would be one of his good points, surely?

I think so. Nice to see you’ve changed your mind so quickly and completely.

But he saved 50 million lives, stared down a Somali warlord, failed to get elected as a NZ MP twice before, is loved by the media and certain bloggers and then he went and spoilt it all by appointing all the helengnomes. Ah well Robert Guyton likes him
