Over-Fertile
Dr. Michael Kamrava has had his license to practice revoked. Dr. Kamrava, you might recall, is the “doctor” who implanted 12 embryos in Nadia Suleman, who then went on to have octuplets. Ms. Suleman, at the time, had five other children – all conceived by IVF – and was an unemployed single mother.
I have already blogged about this on several occasions. There is no excuse for this sort of grossly unethical conduct. Dr. Kamrava, naturally, was full of excuses, including attempting to blame Ms. Suleman because she agreed to undergo “foetal reduction” (partial abortion) if she had a multiple pregnancies, but then disappeared from follow up. This is not a convincing story, of course. There is no possible way that Dr Kamrava, who had performed IVF before on Ms Suleman, could not have known that she had obvious deep-seated psychological imbalances. Exactly how many single mothers with five children ask for more?
Dr Kamvara did not simply place financial considerations above the proper care of his patient; he made financially motivated decisions to the detriment of his patient’s health. That is unforgivable.
Medicine and the American people are well rid of him.
