MacDoctor Listens (Updated)
Okay, Okaaaaaay.
White text on black background is giving people brain damage – fixed
Garish colour scream is causing nausea – fixed
And for those of you for whom one more click is just a click too far – everything is back on my front page – fixed
Ah. If only all things in life were so easy to fix…
Feel free to comment on this scheme which now sports a softer “blogger” feel. Inconsistencies in the colour scheme will be dealt with over the next few days.
Additional:
I have followed Madeleine’s suggestion and muted the colour to co-ordinate with the header. I have also ensured the colours are web-safe, meaning those of you with earlier versions of Microsoft’s travesty of a browser will see approximately the same thing as me. MS still interprets CSS in a unique fashion so please don’t blame me if the side bar winds up above the header, blame Bill Gates…

Much better. Thanks.

You’re welcome.
Suddenly my headache has gone…

Change is good but too many colours is my feedback.
In the same way one should design one’s lounge around a piece of artwork or a throw rug, choosing colours that are in the central piece and structures within the room that fit the feel of the central item so too should one’s blog’s colour scheme, font, look and feel fit synchoniously (is that a word?) with one’s blog header.
My advice to you is stick with colours and looks and feels that are found within your blog header. You have too much happening.
The navigation and layout are clean. You should just fiddle with the colours so that if they are not in the header they are not on the blog.
General rule of thumb choose a dark and a light as your black and white (they don’t have to be black and white but just serve the function of). From there choose two complimentary colours as your highlight colours and if you have to bring in one more as an accent colour make it fairly neutral.

Co-ordinated colours! what a novel idea!
Thanks for the advice, Madeleine. Will have to consider deeply as that may require planning rather than the MacDoctor’s customary shotgun approach….

This is much better! Well done.
Not sure completely about the vast acres of different shades of yellow background in the comments thread but the overall look and feel of the site really works !
Jan 28 10 7:29 pm
I would have like more muted shades of yellow but I decided it was more important to stick with websafe colours (a colour set that all browsers could read). At least there is no danger of you falling asleep in the comments section!

looks fantastic!

Big thanks.

Thanks, my eyes and brain appreciate the calmer approach.
If you want to change again, I second Madeleine – when it comes to mixing colours less is more.
Your posts are of sufficient quality – and your headlines arresting – that you don’t need colours screaming for attention.

Well, I for one am glad you went into medicine and not graphic design.
I’ll stick with RSS.

Mac,
Colour scheme is great, and it reads easy.
Thanks for the changes. And you didn’t even have to listen.
Any chance of running for PM?

I liked the old theme better. The font was snappy to me, and I could read the whole of each blog post on the home page in about a minute, rather than just an excerpt on the home page for each. I understand however if the consensus was to make the font bigger and thus easier to read.
I preferred the black writing on white for the blog post, and I find it difficult to read the blog roll in that brownish font colour. Just my opinion.
Needless to say, MacdD is still a favourite blog of mine. Keep up the good work, and go with what most of your readers want!

It may just be my machine but…when I access your blog it comes up black and then flashes to the black surround and the gray background. It is a very unpleasant effect. It may be something to do with the speed of loading or it may be the way it is set up or…frankly with my level of internet and blog knowledge it could be anything.
Many thanks.

This is a layered site and loads with a background (black) and text (dark red), followed by the stippling graphic, followed by the rest of the content. Most sites load like this, but the effect is made worse by the high contrast between the black background and the light grey.
The effect is less unsettling if you use Safari 3, Firefox 3 or Chrome. IE is a dog and loads noticeably more slowly.
Or you could just close your eyes and count to ten when you load my blog…

Hi MacDoc, I don’t suppose you could change the colour of the comments box?
My mouse cursor thingy is dark grey on light grey at the top of the box, invisible in the middle, and light grey on dark grey at the bottom of the box, maybe it’s just my computer.
Feb 1 10 7:20 pm
Is that better?
Feb 1 10 9:59 pm
Heaps better, thanks.
Feb 1 10 7:53 pm
I realize that I am now just skipping the grey-on-grey words so anything you quote is missed by me. The whole effect is just harder to read. My loss I know.

I have tried every browser known to man in Windows XP and OSX and I can’t duplicate your problem Aye Aye. I suspect that you have the contrast turned down on your monitor, or else you simply have a very old monitor. The grey on grey text is easily readable in all browsers except for IE 6 and below (but that is a CSS problem). Does anyone else have this problem?
