Done

Okay, the new theme is installed and running. I may fiddle with it again from time to time but let’s see how it shakes down. The new theme has threaded comments (without resorting to flash or third party sites) which should make some of our longer threads easier to follow.

Feel free to comment below – like it or love it or simply found a weird quirk.

The Elder MacDaughter took one look, screamed “My eyes!” and ran away.

No accounting for taste….

  • The white type on black background looks nasty. Well, it is the black background that looks nasty.
On the sidebars, the black type on a grey background is practically unreadable.
The turquoise type on grey works well.
I used to rather enjoy watching the “Regular reads” gradually popping up.

But I enjoy the content, so do I just have to put up with the hideous look?

    • I suspect you may be trying to view the site on an oldish version of IE (or it might be all versions of IE as they are all non-standard). The readability issues are not present on Safari, Firefox or Chrome. On IE 5.2 for Mac (the last version MS provided) the site looks like a complete dog’s breakfast. IE seems to render the charcoal-gray, textured background as straight black and the light grey sidebars much darker that safari or firefox

      MacDoctor’s suggestion: switch to a REAL browser… :-)

  • Just read through RSS like I do :)

Sorry mate, I’m in the “don’t like” category.
.-= scrubone´s last blog ..Bit like the new Section 59 this one… =-.

  • Sorry doc, but I’m with your eldest.

Apart from the black background, the fact that I have to click through to read a post is a schlep, as I read this blog two to three times a week, and have to open multiple tabs to read all the articles.

    Like the fonts though

    • Much as it pains me to say it, you may be better off with an RSS reader unless you want to comment. The click-through is the only way I can tell which posts are attracting traffic. Otherwise all my hits read “main page”.

  • Your daughter gets my vote too – it looks very busy with all these colours.

But sometimes something new takes a bit of getting used to so maybe it will look better next visit.
.-= Homepaddock´s last blog ..My Love Is Like A Red Red Rose =-.

    • Yes, I am re-thinking the colour scheme. I decided to be adventurously bold with my colours, but, as youngest MacDaughter points out , I have all the colour sense of a deranged magpie… :-D

  • Interesting – we will get used to it I’m sure.

I do have to reassure myself it has finished loading tho – perhaps the comments should come before the post footer?
.-= Andrei´s last blog ..More traffic safety silliness =-.

    • Unfortunately, if there is a sizeable comment section, that would rather destroy the purpose of the post footers. There is quite a lot of space around the post navigation, which I might try to pare down.

PS: It’s finished loading when your hard drive stops rattling… ;-)

  • Sorry to see that you are still using the caduceus (staff of Hermes, god of merchants and thieves), rather than the staff of Asklepios (god of Medicine) as a symbol on your header!

    • Well spotted, Richard. You are the first person to notice (and tell me). My use of the caduceus is, of course, quite deliberate. My “message” is about Merchants and Thieves. (well Doctors and Politicians actually, but it’s close enough).

I don’t consider myself to be Hermes, the messenger of the Gods – more Herpes. the messenger of medicine. :-D

  • You’ve said you’re reviewing the colours, MacDoctor, so I decided a few minutes ago not to give my opinion (which is very unfavourable) on the black background. However I just switched to the Mental Suggestion post and was confonted with red text on a black background. That is too dire to go unremarked!

    • Yes, I think that was the point at which eldest MacDaughter ran away…

Am muting the colours as we speak.
