The inquiry was set up to pick at the banks, they would have looked even sillier if they'd come back with a sensible report that said the banks were doing properly what banks do, i.e. make money from money. I laughed when I saw Russsel on the telly, looking like he had some great insights to deliver, telling us that the banks had made big profits. Hello, they're banks. And we are consumers, and if we don't like our bank we go to another bank, or cut down on the banking services we use.
Let's be honest, the inquiry had to find fault with the banks, there was no other option for these politicians. They had to go through with their pantomime. But this was staged exclusively for the benefit of these politicians to get some attention. I can picture them sitting around trying to think of a way to get recognised, thinking about what would really push the buttons of mainstream NZ to get some attention. Got it! says Russsel, the Banks!!! Everybody thinks banks make too much money, let's have a toothless enquiry into bank profits and prove what everybody knows already, that banks make profits.

Harpoon:

But seriously. Most of the panel are ex journalists, academics and lawyers. You can't tell me they have sufficient understanding of the vagaries of the banking sector to make a competent value-judgement

And Jim Anderton, as the architect of Kiwibank, should be the LAST person to be part of a panel investigating bank rates. Talk about conflict of interest.

you would have to argue that most of the current Cabinet are not qualified for their portfolios and should therefore resign.

Don't tempt me. :-)

Mac, you're moving the goalposts on that one.

Firstly, what jim Anderton? It was his company for crying out loud!

Secondly, it is unfair, unproductive and silly to insist that the only people with valid ability to judge the NZ banking sector are those who have been self employed business owners. Using similar reasoning, you would have to argue that most of the current Cabinet are not qualified for their portfolios and should therefore resign.

Harpoon:

Right
These are not business owners, these are people who have had jobs. There is a difference.
