Beat Ups

Three Media Beats up in the Herald this morning. They really are on form today.

1. Money for poor cuts load on Labtests. The article tries to make this out to be some sort of subsidy for Labtests. Actually this money has been available for some time to assist low-income people who often do not have transport to get to a blood depot. It was available when DML had the contract but GPs are reluctant to use it as it uses up a lot of nurse time.

2. CYF staff told: you’re minister’s servants. This is just about some daft e-mail from a middle manager who needs his/her head read. Annette King is trying to make it out that Paula Bennett is being aloof and not listening to her staff, even though there is absolutely no evidence of this. A total non-story.

3. Teen says neck broken after hot by police baton. This happened nearly a week ago in Australia. From the loose description of the injury and it’s cause in the article, I assume this is a spinous process fracture (painful, but not dangerous). Almost certainly, a cop has tried to subdue this young man by pinning him with his truncheon pressed into the base of the neck. This is quite painful and a normal person would remain still. The young man in question was probably well anaesthetised by alcohol and would have continued to struggle. The combination of the struggling plus the increasing pressure on the back of the neck would have fractured the spinous process.

Funding that has been there for years, a leaked e-mail from nobody special and a week-old Australian story of a boy injured by a cop whilst being subdued.

Slow News day indeed.

  • This happened nearly a week ago in Australia.

    A complaint will be made to the Independent Police Conduct Authority after a Wellington student allegedly had his neck broken by a police baton as a party was shut down.

    Police were called to a Khandallah party last Friday after gatecrashers began fighting outside, Fairfax Media reported.

    Khandallah is a suburb in Wellington, the capital city of New Zealand MacD

    Bugger. It’s also a suburb in Sydney. :-)

  • King made a valiant but doomed effort to create a mountain out of worm cast.
    I’ve no sympathy for the student as he is probably suffering the consequences of;
    (a)being an obnxious oik, and;
    (b)most likely suggesting the constable holding the baton could use it for other activities, (or similar).

  • Just goes to show that a Glock does a rather better job than a Baton.

    Clout ‘em with a Baton and they sue.

    Slot ‘em with a Glock and you’re home free.

  • Sinner:

    With a Baton you can flatten, then you can splat ‘em
    But a Glock in the clock is a bit of a shock
    A boot in the bum can make you quite glum
    But if a Taser doesn’t phase yer, I don’t know what will…
