Reading through Saturdays Newspapers for the first time in about six weeks, I was struck by the triviality of it all. So here are some trivial questions and observations on random news items.
1. Can anyone tell me why there is a cap on international student fees? Surely universities should be able to charge whatever they wish, subject only to the price of competing courses?
2. Surely having a referendum on whether referendums should be binding is pointless? That nice Mr. Key is quite capable of ignoring the result of that one as well. He will probably use some such phrases like “The question was ambiguous” or “The current law is working well – I can ignore referenda when ever I like. Just like now”.
3. Surely New Zealand’s lower use of ICU beds is a good thing?
4. A terrorist hid a bomb in his rectum to escape detection. Just for the record, there is no way I am going through a full-body cavity search the next time I board a plane.
5. Apparently the headline “Cougar loose in Seattle” does not refer to a sexual predator, merely a feline one…
6. Don’t you find that the medias faux outrage at the soldiers who photographed themselves with a bomb decorated with an energy drink logo is just a bit precious? Do they think that we deploy them to help little old ladies across the road?
