Swine Flu Update 16
Researches has now tracked the path of swine flu in April and May and found that (GASP!) it followed the flight paths out of Mexico. I never would have guessed…
Once again, the Australians have announced they have manufactured a swine flu vaccine. I think that’s the third time they’ve announced it this month. But I do understand their enthusiasm. Unfortunately nothing has really changed. It will still take many months to do even basic clinical trials, by which time the silly disease will have been through the entire population. Still, the Americans might be appreciative and it is probably worthwhile adding the swine flu vaccine to the normal mix of seasonal flu vaccines, as it will almost certainly be back next year.
Last week the World Health Organisation virologists sounded very reassuring and knowledgeable as they explained that the Swine Flu virus was stable and showing no signs of mutating. Today, the first case of swine flu resistance to Tamiflu was uncovered.
Tomorrow, I’m going to turn into a mindless, brain-eating zombie to avoid the winter rush…

Have you had`a look at Google’s Flu Trends recently?
If it is any kind of a predictor, we should all be worried.
I am taking it seriously as the number of people I know who have or have had this new flu is rising. Some of them seem to be quite seriously sick. The diagnosis isn’t based on a swab but their GPs still seem to have excluded seasonable flu on the basis of very high temperatures or the patient having already had seasonal flu one this year already.
That methodology is suspect. The level of your temperature is a very unreliable indicator of a flu and there are usually several varieties of seasonal flu going round at any given time. Without a swab, you are really just guessing.

As I have commented before, this disease is not benign – it has a mortality. Catching it now, to avoid the winter rush is stupid when you have a 60% chance of not getting it at all.
