Shrill Phil
I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who finds Phil Goff’s shrieking about tax cuts being “gone forever” to be pretty nauseating hypocrisy. How can anyone forget nine years of Cullen syphoning off the Nation’s wealth without a single tax cut until he was forced into it as a gigantic election bribe last year? Who has forgotten the chewing gum tax cuts that were discarded the following year? Although I do not agree with National’s indefinite deferral of tax cuts, they, at least, have some excuse for it. Cullen simply wouldn’t because it interfered with his ideology.
National has opted to put some sugar coating on some rather unpleasant medicine that is going to happen over the next couple of years.
That may not be good economics, but it is probably good politics.

What I would like to see is some reform of “entitlements”. I am one of those lucky enough to receive these, however they provide a disincentive to get some additional work. The time cost of interacting with Work and Income for a childcare subsidy is a disincentive also.
And it seems simple enough that borrowing to save is too stupid for words doesn’t seem to stop putting the words in to Phil’s mouth.
