Jade Goody Dies

Jade Goody, the woman whose appearance on Big Brother made her the woman Britons loved to ridicule, has died of terminal cervical cancer. She was the poster-child of pointless media exposure and a perfect example of being famous for nothing but “being famous”. From the time of her first appearance on Big Brother, her life has essentially been lived out in the tabloid pages of Britain’s increasingly voyeuristic press.

Her denigration was ugly. She was not ridiculed because she was stupid, or fat, or foul-mouthed, as heinous as that might have been. She was ridiculed by the people of Britain because she was exactly like them. You can’t get nastier than that.

She will not be missed by Britain. The population will latch on to another poor soul soon enough. She will be missed by her husband and her two children, and that, at least, gives her life meaning beyond the vast trivialisation of her public life.

Rest in peace, Jade Goody. No one will laugh at you now.
