Warrior Woman

And for all of us who were wondering why John Key saw fit to promote an inexperienced single-term MP to the complex portfolio of Social Development, now we have the answer.

It was not because she is Maori – and Key wanted a more “inclusive” government.

It was not because she is a single mom and is thus a powerful symbol that “social development” can be about development and not simply welfare.

It was not because she is a hard worker and can cope with the demands of the portfolio

It was not because she is ambitious for herself and tends to shine in the things she puts her hands to.

What yesterday’s episode – where she single-handedly broke up an ugly fight in a crowd of young women, preventing a full-blown brawl – tells us, is that Key picked her because she has a warrior’s heart. She will not “administer” her portfolio. She will not react to crises with daft legislation or endless talk. She will not go “beneficiary bashing” on an ideological crusade.

She will fight for people to have the same chance she had. If necessary, she will drive them into taking it.

She will be very good for those stuck in the trap of welfare.

Well spotted, John. Good choice.

  • I dont have an opinion for her either way…I still dont even after the fight break up.

I’m still reserving judgement on her. I want to wait to she what she does in her portfolio area.

And regardless of what you may think, surely a welfare ‘trap’ is better than homelessness and the like. Im not all that keen on welfare dependency either, but I am not prepared to have single mothers and their children chucked out on the street. I am hoping that Ms Bennett keeps that in mind.

  • What I mean, if Paula can help people off welfare without making them homeless or even threatening to make them homeless, then I will support her.
