Waiting for Tony
Poor Tony Ryall. He must be so disappointed. He told those naughty DHB people that they mustn’t make patients wait so long in Emergency Departments and it seems that waiting times are getting worse.
Naughty, naughty DHBs. Why won’t they listen?
Why are patients waiting so long?
They are waiting for you, Tony
They are waiting for you to provide them with more ED staff because waiting times won’t improve until you do. No matter how many new standards you set.
You want to know how? Just follow these instructions, Tony:
- Work out how many more junior and senior doctors and how many nurses you need.
- Find a sharp knife.
- Remove everything from the Ministry of Health Personnel list marked “policy” or “analyst”. Each one is worth about two nurses or a junior doctor or half a consultant.
- Continue cutting until you have fully funded your emergency departments.
- Now give this money to the DHBs and tell then they have three months to staff the departments or you’ll fire everyone on every DHB board.
- Glare at them and play with your knife if they try to argue with you. Make sure there is still blood on the knife.
And hurry up, please. People are dying to get into your hospitals.

I see no reason why policy advice on health cannot be folded into the Ministry of Social Development and the MoH focuses on actually keeping people healthy
Actually the MOH does virtually nothing except policy advice. Keeping people healthy is the purview of the DHBs

You are nuts – completely fucking nuts – no better than Helen – if you think cutting ever single policy analyst would really fix anything in the hospitals.
1. Close down the health ministry overnight.
2. Fire all DHB boards etc.
3. Stop all government payments to hospitals, doctors, etc.
That’s it!
That is all that is required. No stupid fucking ACT party vouchers. No fucking libertarian endowments or insurance. Just reach up to that big switch, Minister Ryall, marked “socialist healthcare” and pull it from “on” to “off”.
