Flash of the Blinding Obvious

I see Phil (Walking in Her Footsteps) Goff magnanimously admits that the Electoral Finance Act was “not as good as it could have been”.

Splendid bit of meiosis, Phil.

I would have called it a steaming heap of rabbit droppings, actually. And I am not given to earthy invective. I am, however, glad to see that our new Labour leader is starting to clean up the disastrous mess left by the last three years of Labour government.

Goff is requesting that Labour is involved in the “review” of the Act because “Any matter that’s constitutional or electoral we should be seeking consensus for.” Indeed. I doubt if the irony of that statement has escaped Goff. Annette (common sense) King is presumably keeping a low profile.

I suspect the Act will be scrapped in its entirety and sent back to the select committee. They have two years to revise it, so I don’t see that as a problem. Notwithstanding some of my more right-wing colleagues, John Key will, of course, allow Labour to join in the process. Otherwise he will be seen as being as partisan as Helen Clark and any resulting legislation will be as flawed as the current EFA.
