When Will NZ be Modern?

This is the question asked of Helen Clark by a ten-year-old called Nami, today.

Good question, Nami.

Possibly the most penetrating question asked of Helen Clark this whole campaign. She chose to talk about broadband. It was perfectly possible that she could have talked about our world leading status in social policies, climate change and single-parent families, so I have asked the question more precisely.

♦ When will our roads be upgraded to first-world highways (at least between major cities)? Or will we be all be traveling by rail, as we were 100 years ago?

♦ When will we have true broadband (at least in the major cities)? Or will we all be supporting New Zealand Post, as we were 30 years ago?

♦ When will we have a reliable power supply (at least in the major cities)? Or will we all be using coal-fired stoves, as we were 70 years ago?

♦ When will we be able to use up-to-date techniques and drugs (at least in the major hospitals)? Or will we always be 20 years behind the rest of the world?

♦ When will we have a public transport system (in any city) that will be useful? Or should we walk to work, as we did in the last century?

♦ When will we have growth rates like our Asian neighbours? Or will we always be poor?

When will New Zealand be modern?

  • Oh my god, a two-headed flying pig…
    No wait…

  • With 10 years of deficits forecast it won’t be soon, but the right (in the correct and political sense) result on November 8 will make it sooner than the wrong (or left) result.
